The focus of our philanthropic and volunteer efforts is the education of children in low-income communities. We concentrate on programs that help them succeed in school. In addition, we focus on nutrition education and hunger relief - primarily through America's Second Harvest and its network of food banks. In 2004, the Company contributed more than $3 million in grants and more than $46 million in food product donations to support our communities. America's Second Harvest named Quaker and PepsiCo its 2003 Corporate Partner of the Year for in-kind, financial and volunteer contributions. Casa Central, the Midwest's largest Hispanic social service agency, and the Spanish Coalition for Jobs also named Quaker its 2003 Corporate Partners. The United Way Metro Chicago honored Quaker/PepsiCo with its highest award, the Community Spirit Award, for contributing more than $1 million through leadership, employee and retiree giving, employee volunteerism and running the best over-all campaign.
Our employees and the PepsiCo Foundation also provided substantial support to local United Way campaigns. PepsiCo generously matches employee contributions $1: $1 in support of the communities where our employees live. In 2004, employees contributed more than $1 million to United Way campaigns throughout the country. The company also encourages and enhances employee philanthropy. The PepsiCo Foundation provides $1: $1 support of those gifts through its Matching Gifts program, and double matches regular full-time employees' continuous ongoing volunteer service.
In its home base of Chicago, QTG has "adopted" key public inner-city schools and communities – Jenner Academy in Cabrini-Green, Libby Elementary School in Engelwood and Wells High School in West Town -- to concentrate its support for donations of dollars and supplies, its funding of special educational programs and its volunteer efforts. Quaker's long history of encouraging and supporting employee volunteer programs, both at its headquarters and at local facilities, include school mentoring programs, such as Junior Achievement, Working in the Schools and the Cabrini-Green Tutoring program for nearly 35 years. These efforts also include a wide variety of employee-initiated fund-raising events for special causes such as, the March of Dimes' WalkAmerica, Hunger Walk, Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure and various marathons that support research efforts on behalf of AIDS, cancer, diabetes and heart disease. In addition, many employees volunteer at shelters and food pantries, donate blood, work with the Boy and Girl Scouts, and provide food, clothing and toys to various not-for-profit organizations.
