• What are Steel Cut Oats and how are they different from other types of Quaker® Oats?

  Steel Cut Oats are whole oats that have not been rolled into flakes. Instead, they are cut approximately into thirds. Cooking time is 30 minutes and the texture is heartier than rolled oats. Steel Cut Oats are also known as Scotch Oats, Pinhead Oats (in Great Britain because they resemble the size and shape of the head of a large pin) and Irish Oats. Quaker® Old Fashioned Oats are whole oats that have been rolled to flatten them. Quick Quaker® Oats and Quaker® Instant Oats are made from Steel Cut Oats that have been rolled a little thinner than Old Fashioned Oats so they cook faster. All forms of Quaker® Oats, including Steel Cut, Old Fashioned, Quick, and Instant Oats are whole grains. That means they are equally nutritious because they supply all parts of the oat grain including the bran, endosperm and germ. The different size and shape of the oats only affects the cooking time and texture.



• What is the difference between Quaker® Old Fashioned Oatmeal and Quick Quaker® Oats?

  Quaker® Old Fashioned Oats are whole oats that are rolled to flatten them. They contain all parts of the oat grain including the bran, endosperm and germ portion. Quick Quaker® Oats are made the same way but are simply cut into slightly smaller pieces so they cook faster.



• How does Instant Quaker® Oatmeal differ from Old Fashioned Quaker® Oats and Quick Quaker® Oats?

  Instant Quaker® Oats use the exact same oats, only they are rolled a little bit thinner and cut finer so that they cook very quickly. Additionally, they have some vitamins, minerals and flavoring ingredients added.



• Your packaging says your Standard and Quick Oats are “100% Natural.” What does that mean?

  It means these products do not contain any artificial or synthetic ingredients, just oats.



• Can you send me some of your oat tubes?

  Unfortunately, due to our manufacturing process, we are unable to send out empty oat tubes.



• Does Oatmeal contain oat bran? And if so, why isn't oat bran listed on the label?

  Yes. Oatmeal is a whole grain cereal. Approximately 12% of each whole grain oat is the bran portion. Therefore, every time you eat Old Fashioned or Quick Quaker Oats, you're eating oat bran. Old Fashioned and Quick Quaker Oats contain one ingredient: whole rolled oats. Since oat bran is a natural portion of the rolled oat, it is not technically considered a separate ingredient. To identify products containing oat bran, look not only for oat bran, but also for rolled oats and whole oat flour on the ingredient label.


• Is Old Fashioned Quaker Oats better than Quick or Instant Quaker Oats for reducing cholesterol?

  No. All of the oats will help reduce cholesterol. However, not all of the Instant Oatmeal flavors qualify for the soluble oat fiber claim. The flavors that do not qualify are Raisin, Date & Walnut, Honey Nut, Dinosaur Eggs and all of the Fruit and Cream flavors.

  Quick and Easy Method

  • Place 2 cups of Quick or Old Fashioned Quaker Oats into one leg of a nylon stocking; close open end by tying a knot.
  • Place stocking under faucet; turn water on to full force, using warm water at a comfortable temperature.
  • When finished filling tub, "swirl" stocking back and forth through water 5 or 6 times.
  • Lift stocking above water and wring to squeeze water and starch out of stocking.
  • Discard stocking -- do NOT reuse.
  • Soak in tub as recommended by physician or for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Gently pat dry. Use once or twice daily, or as directed by physician. INFANTS: Use 1/3 cup and follow instructions above. Soak infant (in infant bath tub) for 10 minutes or as directed by physician.

  Blender/Food Processor Method

  • Place 1 cup Quick or Old Fashioned Oats into food processor or blender; grind oats into finest powder possible.
  • Turn water on to full force, using warm water at a comfortable temperature.
  • Slowly sprinkle oat powder under running water.
  • Stir water thoroughly to avoid clumping or settling.
  • Soak in tub as recommended by physician or for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Gently pat dry. Use once or twice daily, or as directed by physician. INFANTS: Use 1/3 cup and follow instructions above. Soak infant (in infant bath tub) for 10 minutes or as directed by physician.


• How can I do an oatmeal facial? And how can I customize my facial?

  An oatmeal facial is very easy to do — all you really need is oats and water. If you'd like something a little more "exotic" you can add other ingredients.

  Basic Oatmeal Facial:

  1/4 cup ground oats (about 1/2 cup Quick or Old Fashioned Quaker Oats, unground) 2 to 3 tablespoons water

  Mix ground oats and water until the mixture is a smooth, spreadable paste. You can add more oats or water as needed. Apply the oat paste to a clean face, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 15 - 20 minutes. Wash off with warm water and follow with a rinse of cold water.

  You can customize your facial by adding any of the following "Mix-In" ingredients to the Basic Oatmeal Facial recipe. You can use one Mix-In or several — half the fun is the experimenting! Here are some helpful hints to help you customize your facial.

  • Try adding from 1/2 teaspoon to one tablespoon when starting out. A good rule of thumb is the more "liquidy" the Mix-In ingredient is, the less you use. Don't worry if the paste consistency doesn't turn out right. If the paste is too thin, just add some more oats. If it's too stiff, add some more water or more of your chosen Mix-In.
  • When adding mashed fruit, start at about a tablespoon. Be sure to decrease the amount of water by about the same amount. Add more liquid or oats as needed, until you have the desired consistency.
  • When we refer to a "teaspoon" or a "tablespoon," we mean measuring spoons used for baking, not those from your flatware set.
  • If you are allergic to any of these foods we don't recommend putting them on your face.

• How long can you keep Quaker® Snack Bars?

  The recommended shelf life for most Quaker® Snack Bars is eight months. Quaker Chewy® Granola Bars with NESTLÉ® BUTTERFINGER® pieces and Quaker Chewy® Granola Bars with 25% Less Sugar have a six month shelf life. Most Quaker products have "Best Before" dates; however, some products carry a code representing the manufacturing date rather than a best before date. An example of a manufacturing code is: 7H17A1.

  A = January

  Starting at the left side, the number 7 indicates the year the product was made, that is 2007. The first letter identifies our production facility. The next two numbers represent the day of the month, and the last letter signifies the month of the year with January = A, February = B, March = C and so forth. The last numbers or letters represent additional plant information. The manufacturing code referenced above indicates product made January 17, 2007 with a recommended six or eight month shelf life from that date, depending on the flavor.

  It is safe to eat Quaker® Snack Bars beyond recommended shelf life. The recommended shelf life indicates a period when a product has optimal flavor and freshness. Product beyond recommended shelf life may experience slight changes in flavor, color or nutritional value. We recommend storing all grain-based products in a clean, cool and dry location.

  All Quaker® Snack Bar packaging includes the warning that the product "may contain traces of peanuts." Specifically, the following Quaker Snack Bar varieties contain peanuts or peanut butter — Quaker Chewy® Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Granola Bars, Quaker Chewy® Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Granola Bars with 25% Less Sugar, Quaker Chewy® 90 Calorie Peanut Butter Granola Bars, Quaker Chewy® Dipps® Peanut Butter Granola Bars, and Quaker® Granola Bites – Peanut Butter. The warning does not mean that peanuts are added to any other varieties; there have been no product reformulations. Federal laws regarding the use and labeling of all ingredients are followed carefully by the Quaker Oats Company.

  Between the production of flavors that contain peanuts or tree nuts and those that do not contain these ingredients, the line is shut down and thoroughly cleaned. Chewy Granola

• What is granola?

  In the purest sense, granola means oats. Granola is generally thought of as a hearty, wholesome, filling combination of ingredients such as whole grains held together by a binder such as honey, molasses or corn syrup.



• How do you make Quaker Chewy® Granola Bars? Is there a recipe available?

  Making granola bars is a two-step process. We make the granola first, and the finished bar second. Granola is made by blending rolled oats, whole wheat, and various other ingredients for binding and flavoring. This mixture is dried in an oven. The bar is made by taking the warm granola mixture and adding in crisp rice and syrup to bind the ingredients together and add flavor. Then the "goodies," such as chocolate chips or raisins, are added and the final mixture is uniformly compressed and cooled to become firm enough to cut into individual bars, wrapped and packaged. Unfortunately, there is not a recipe available for making Quaker Chewy® Bars at home.

Tortilla Mix

• What does 'masa' mean?

  The word 'masa' means dough in the Spanish language.



• How is masa made?

  Masa is made similarly to the process created by early Aztec women. Kernels of corn are heated in a lime (calcium carbonate) solution. They are then rinsed, drained, ground and dried. The ground corn then passes through a system of rollers and sifters, finally reaching the packaging line. It is here that the corn is combined with other ingredients to make the masa flour ready for packaging.



• What is the difference between harina preparada and masa?

  Although both are used to make tortillas, masa is made from corn and is used to make corn tortillas while harina preparada is made of wheat flour and is used to make flour tortillas.



• Does masa contain gluten?

  We understand that individuals sensitive to gluten cannot digest even trace amounts of gluten. Since so many of our products contain grain ingredients and many products are made in the same facility, we cannot guarantee that any particular product is entirely free of gluten.



• Can I use masa tortilla mix instead of flour to make bread?

  No. Masa is made from corn so it doesn't contain enough protein to give bread its proper structure. Also, masa is corn that has been soaked in lime water, giving it a very distinct flavor that would not be compatible in most breads.

Grits

• What are grits?

  Grits are made from the milling of corn kernels. The first step in the process is to clean the kernels; then, the grains are steamed for a short time to loosen the tough outer hull. The grain kernel is split, which removes the hull and germ, leaving the broken endosperm. Heavy steel rollers break up the endosperm into granules, which are separated by a screening process. The large-size granules are the grits; the smaller ones become cornmeal and corn flour.



• What type of grits does Quaker make?

  Quaker Grits come in three varieties: Old-Fashioned, Quick and Instant.



• When do people eat them?

Quisp

• Who is Quisp?

  Quisp, a 1960s-style alien from the planet "Q," is cute, witty and edgy, but also lovable. He weighs in at 43 pounds and is just under four feet tall. He devotes his efforts to delivering Quisp, his "quispy, quunchy, quazy energy cereal" to the inhabitants of Earth and beyond. Dressed in a green spacesuit with a propeller on his head, the pink Quisp flies around speaking in his high and lispy Brooklynesque accent, peppering his sentences with random and unexpected emphasis. Often, his eyes will roll about in their sockets, leaving one with the impression that Quisp is crazy. But Quisp is not crazy — just having fun, as his impish grin shows.

Rice Snacks

• What is the history of rice cakes?

  The first rice cakes were developed in Southeast Asia where rice has been grown for nearly 5,000 years. Rice cakes took off just as the mid-80s health craze began sweeping the nation. Suddenly, there was a huge demand for sensible snacks. Since the first plain rice cakes hit the market, manufacturers have launched a whole new era in rice cakes and rice snacks with flavors like caramel corn, cheddar cheese, and apple cinnamon.



• How are Quaker Rice Cakes made?

  A rice cake is formed when heat and pressure are added to the grain causing it to expand abruptly. A portion of grain is set onto a mini baking pan. As a hot cylinder presses down onto the pan, sizzling pressure is released. The heat is so intense that after only a few seconds, the grain makes a loud popping noise as it bursts. This process causes the grains to 'pop' and interweave. There are no oils, additives or binding ingredients used during this process. The flavoring is applied to the cake after it is formed.



• Are Quaker Rice Cakes made from whole grain?

  The large Quaker Rice Cakes are made from whole grain, hearty, long brown rice. Every kernel of grain has three parts — the bran, endosperm and germ. This is what constitutes a "whole" grain. Some of the cakes are also made with degerminated corn, which is not whole grain. The germ is the storehouse or source of fat that naturally occurs in grains. The removal of the germ allows us to produce cakes that are low fat or fat free.



• Do Quaker Rice Snacks contain gluten?

  We understand that individuals sensitive to gluten cannot digest even trace amounts of gluten. To date, the Food and Drug Administration has not defined the term "gluten free." Since so many of our products contain grain ingredients and many products are made in the same facility, we cannot guarantee that any particular product is entirely free of gluten.

• Can I get a free sample of Quaker Rice Snacks?

  Unfortunately, we don't have the capability to distribute samples or process direct orders. You can find Quaker Rice Snacks at grocery stores nationwide.



• How long can you keep Quaker Rice Snacks?

  On the back of the package, you'll find a "best before" date. We guarantee the quality of our product up until that date. For the freshest snacking experience, we suggest you eat the product within a few days of opening the bag. Once opened, Quaker Rice Snacks will hold their freshness best if stored in an airtight container. You can also reseal the bag with a chip clip or rubber band and store it in a cool, dry environment.



• Why is it recommended that I do not heat Quaker Rice Snacks in a toaster or microwave?

  Because of the dryness of the product, we do not recommend that Quaker Rice Snacks be heated in a toaster, toaster oven or microwave.



• Are Quaker Rice Snacks kosher-certified?

  Quakes Rice Snacks are not kosher-certified.



• I can't find Crispy Mini's any more. Do you still make this product?

  Yes, but in 2001 we changed the name from Crispy Mini's to Quakes. You'll still find the same great Crispy Mini Rice Snacks you love in our new Quakes Rice Snacks package.

Kretschmer Wheat Germ

• What is wheat germ?

  It’s the “heart” of the wheat kernel — a concentrated source of several essential nutrients including vitamin E, folate (folic acid), phosphorous, thiamin, zinc and magnesium.



• How do I use Kretschmer Wheat Germ?

  Sprinkle it on yogurt or fruit, or use as a substitute for breading. Wheat germ can also replace up to 1/2 cup of the flour in recipes for muffins, breads, pancakes and many other baked goods.

Barley

• Is barley a whole grain?

  Barley has a particularly tough hull, which is difficult to remove without losing some of the bran. Lightly pearled barley is not technically a whole grain (as small amounts of the bran are missing) – but it's full of fiber and much healthier than a fully refined grain.



• What does 'pearled' mean?

  The outer hull has been removed from the grain kernel by abrasive action. Barley is primarily sold this way as the outer covering is inedible. Both Quaker Quick and Regular Barley are pearled. Quaker/Mother's barley goes through 4 pearlings.



• What is the difference between Regular and Quick Barley?

  Regular Barley is pearled, round barley. It is thicker than Quick Barley. Regular takes 50 to 60 minutes to cook. Quick Barley is pearled and flattened (rolled similarly to oats). Because it is thinner it cooks in 10 to 12 minutes.

Puffed Rice & Puffed Wheat

• Is it true that Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat are shot from cannons?

  In 1902, Dr. Alexander P. Anderson invented a process for puffing grains referred to as "shot from guns." Recognizing the value of this innovation, Quaker entered into an agreement with Dr. Anderson to continue his experiments at Quaker's plant in Chicago. In 1904, Puffed Wheat and Puffed Rice were introduced to the public at the World's Fair in St. Louis, and in 1909, Quaker Puffed Rice and Quaker Puffed Wheat were the newest cereal products.
